Articles Submit: INTERESTING FUNERALS: Everyone Has a Story

by Pam Vetter

Why not write down the special stories of your life? Do it for your loved one, do it for your children, do it to reminisce with your spouse… So many people have video cameras these days or recording devices, you could even record it if you don’t want to write it down. But, everyone has a story to share. One day, it will be our time to leave this world and what better, than to leave behind your full story from beginning to end. Don’t leave anything out either. Include your childhood, teenage years, adult years, parenting years, moments of struggle, and moments of joy. There are so many stories that make up someone’s life journey, revealing a treasured path because each and every one of us affect someone else in a positive way.

Certified Funeral Celebrants interview family members when a loved one passes away. The Celebrant is trying to find those special stories of someone’s life that makes them who they were in life and how they lived their life. In meeting with families, a Celebrant may hear, “Daddy used to tell us stories about his childhood…” Those childhood moments are the stories that helped shape a life.

Celebrant Funeral services are having a bigger impact on the family unit because they are trying to empower the family by giving them a bigger voice in funeral service for their loved one. Celebrants use life stories, favored music, favored poems, and reflect the life of the deceased. Family and friends share the stories they know with the Celebrant and they used to reflect someone's life path.

As our parents get older, there are so many things to still discover. Ask your parents about their childhood. Ask your friends to share their life stories. Knowing these life stories allows you to know relatives and friends on a deeper level. There is power in knowing the interesting stories of someone’s life…even your own. Write them down, share your own stories with your family and friends, but most importantly, share them in some way with someone. Your life stories are important, too.

When it comes time to writing an obituary, what would you want someone to say about your life? Would they get it right? If not, write it for yourself sooner than later, just in case. Just so someone knows your accomplishments, your passions in life, the things that make you different than everyone else in the room. No two stories are absolutely identical. No two life journeys are the same. Every person is unique, every person is special, every person deserves to be remembered…

What is the story you will share today? Everyone has a story...
